Its just a few miles north of Death Valley Junction. We were able to get one without booking even on Thanksgiving day for one night stay. This lovely Oasis spared us the drive from death valley to Las Vegas for overnight stay. But there's nothing wrong with this place, and if I'd consider staying here again when I visit Death Valley next time. You'll have gas stations and more restaurants. An alternative to staying here is the town of Beatty, 45 miles to the north. I had to ask for extra towels every night we stayed - we registered for 2 adults and 2 kids, but apparently they would only leave 2 sets of towels per room, even if they removed more than 2 sets. There's no refrigerator or microwave in the room, but you can use the microwave in the mini mart. WiFi is available, connection speed can be a little sluggish during peak hours. The TV is a smallish CRT, and the reception is not great, but good enough.

The rooms are old, but clean and comfortable. To our amusement, the next morning we saw a huge sculpture of a Holstein cow in the south part of the property, and couldn't help wonder if that's the source of the smell. According to the receptionist, there's a dairy operation nearby, and sometimes the wind blows the wrong way. It dissipated after about an hour and we didn't smell it again for the other 3 days we were there. When we arrived, there's a rather strong cattle smell in the air. No scam, your money is returned when you check out. It'll speed things up a little if you have cash with you. By the way, we were asked to leave a $5 deposit per room key when we arrived. The nearest gas station is in Beatty, which you will pass by if you're driving to Scotty's Castle or the northern part of Death Valley.

The town of Amargosa Valley is actually a few miles to the north. There's no gas, or in fact, pretty much anything else, in the immediate vicinity. It's a few miles away from Amargosa Opera House, just across the Nevada border. If you're looking for a simple place to stay outside Death Valley, this one is a good value.
